Vitamin B12 & Folic Acid
Anemia, Vitamin B12 & Folic Acid Tests
Deficiency can be detected in routine blood work assessing Red Blood Cells , B12 & Folic Acid Levels. A diagnosis of pernicious anemia ( B12 deficiency anemia) is based on the presence of megaloblastic anemia. Megaloblastic anemia is positive with high MCV and normal MCHC , the frequent presence of ovalocytes on the blood smear and hypersegmented neutrophils. Further gastroscopy & biopsy is required to determine if atrophic gastritis Type A ( which leads to reduction of instrisic factor needed to absorb B 12) is the cause .
