Homocysteine

Homocysteine evaluation can be used to assist the evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk. Elevated blood levels of homocysteine (a sulfur containing amino acid) have been linked to an increased risk of premature coronary artery disease and stroke, even among people with normal cholesterol levels.

Homocystinuria is a condition in which an enzyme deficiency causes homocysteine to accumulate in the blood and thus increases risk of cardiovascular disease.
